serious men review

Based on Manu Joseph’s book of the same name, ‘Serious Men’ is a dark comedy- oriented drama, which also beautifully highlights the burning issues casteism in Indian society. In this film, Nawazuddin plays the character of Ayyan Mani who belongs to the lower caste and tries to place his son in so called ‘Serious Men’ category to gain respect and dignity which he couldn’t achieve in his lifetime.

Serious Men storyline:

The movie starts with Nawaz sharing stories with his wife about the three types of people present in the society and how he wishes their son achieves fame and recognition. Though it may look like a typical ‘family struggle drama’ genre, but it has various layers hidden in whole. Nawaz’s struggles to project his son as a genius to the entire world, and how he comes into conflicts with the elites of the society make up the crux of this dark comedy. The climax is interesting and unexpected!

Verdict:

Director Sudhir Mishra beautifully sculptured the poisonous fruits of the society, reservation system and the not-so-perfect education scenario of the country. Nawazuddin along with the other cast just rocked their role, special mention to Akshat Das (played Adi Mani). In one line this movie is totally watchable, thinkable and enjoyable.
