Adapted from Vikram Seth’s novel with the same title, BBC’s six episodic drama series, A Suitable Boy didn’t let down us much. The story is narrated in the background of the fictional city of Brahmpur, where the main protagonists live. The main characters are, Lata (Tanya Maniktala) and Maan Kapoor (Ishaan Khattar) and the story is about their life.
Lata’s mother wants to find a suitable boy for her daughter and has her own level of standard set for the bride groom. But, Lata who is in love with a Muslim youth struggles between her choice, her voice and her life. On the other hand, Maan is a spoilt brat who falls in love with a woman (Tabu) who is double his age and also a Ghazal Singer. Enough to create a fuss in their family circles!
The story has many dramatic turns, and finishes with Lata finding her suitable husband and Maan getting serious about his life.
The best thing about A Suitable Boy is its casting. From Ishaan Khattar to Ram Kapoor, Ranveer Shorey to Randeep Hooda, Vijay Varma, Rasika Duggal, everybody just acts to their name. Dreamy locations, Anushka Shankar’s music, costume choices, etc. have made this series impromptu to its plot-time and gave the perfect sweetness wherever needed. The only con is, the script could have been better as we expect from Miss Mira Nair. Over all, it is a good change of taste if you are done with Mirzapur’s Gaalis.
