Vinesh Phogat becomes the first Indian Wrestler to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made it to the Olympics. Defeating USA’s Sarah Hildenbrandt in the ongoing World Championships on Wednesday, the 25-year-old becomes the Indian wrestler to qualify for the upcoming Tokyo games.
In what can be called as a great news for Indian sports fraternity, Vinesh Phogat thrashed Sarah 8-2 in the second round at the World Wrestling Championship. Vinesh will now compete for the Bronze medal against Greek Maria Prevolaraki. Phogat will play in the 53-kg category at the Olympics along with Mayu Mukaida (Japan), Maria Prevolaraki, and Roksana Zasina (Poland). The other qualifications will be considered after the conclusion of African & Oceania, European, Asian, Pan American, and World Qualification tournaments.
Earlier, Phogat had reached the Quarter Finals at the 2016 Olympics and lost to Sun Yanan (CHN) due to a knee injury.
However, India has already qualified in Archery, Athletics and Shooting categories amounting to 13 players.
