Ace filmmaker Ashutosh Gowaraikar is back to the silver screen with the magnum opus Panipat after a gap of three years. Known for blockbusters like Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar, his period war film stars Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon in lead roles and the film is all set to release on December 6th.
However, its trailer has failed to evoke emotions. When compared to recent period movies that garnered huge response on trailer releases, Panipat became a joke on social media for Arjun Kapoor’s dialogues and Kriti Sanon’s poor expressions. The only saving grace was Sanjay Dutt who looked brilliant as Ahmed Shah Abdali. The response that Ashutosh had expected from Panipat was evoked by Ajay Devgn-starrer Tanhaji’s trailer, which quickly overshadowed Panipat.
Since the film is based on Maratha’s, comparisons with Bajirao Mastaani were quite natural. Right from the script, storyline, acting and even the depiction of Shanivaar Wada, Bajirao Mastaani had dominated in all fronts.
Arjun Kapoor looked dull in the role of Sadashivrao Bhau, the Maratha General. His expressionless face and plain dialogue delivery seem to be killing the impact of the movie. Matching his expressions is the heroine, Kriti Sanon. Kariti claimed that people have compared her to Priyanka Chopra’s Kaashi Bai and even applauded her but we all know that pulling of a performance like Priyanka is not Kriti’s cup of tea.
Even Sanjay Dutt is being compared to Ranveer’s Khilji but people favored Dutt’s restrained ruthlessness, and not Ranveer’s hyper act. Being a seasoned performer, Sanjay surely has added his Khalnayak avatar to the role of Abdali. Yesteryear’s diva Zeenat Aman is making a comeback and we are excited to watch her.
Bollywood has a special love for period films. Let’s wait and see if Aushtosh and Panipat will get the love from the audience at the box office or will meet Mohenjo Daro’s fate!!!
