It was a grand and lavish homecoming for Bollywood celebrities. The first-ever IIFA green carpet was laid out way back in the summer of 2000 in London. Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Dutt walked away with top honors of Best Actress and Best Actor respectively while Sanjay Leela Bhansali bagged the Best Director Award.
Bollywood celebrities who reached the venue in their finest designer wear after braving rains proved that they are the real embodiment of Mumbai’s spirit. The gala event also made way for many fashion trends and few laughable memes.
Deepika Padukone was a vision to behold in her lavender gown and we discovered she is a BTS fan. How? Check her Instagram post where she is sending purple heart to the world. Alia Bhatt descended on the green carpet in her Greek goddess avatar in her dull rose gold strapless gown. Her look was completed with nude makeup and messy fishtail braid.
Another stunner who channeled her inner princess was Sara Ali Khan who was also debuting as a performer on the IIFA stage. Katrina Kaif was gorgeous in her statement blouse with cape sleeves and a high slit skirt. The male actors too had their share of the limelight with statement suits and charming smiles. Shahid Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Ayushmann Khurrana and Salman Khan also made a grand appearance at IIFA. However, Ranveer Singh made the best and the most eccentric green carpet appearance. His makeover sent netizens into a meme frenzy, and some of them were even shared by Deepika Padukone.
After the red-carpet frenzy, the hosts for the evening, Khurrana brothers took over. Ayushmann and Aparshakti once again displayed their incredible chemistry and kept the audience on their toes with belly splitting laughter. One of the highlights of their anchoring was pulling Salman Khan on stage to do an SRK pose. We wonder what SRK has to say about it if Salman could pull it off or not? What do you think? However, there was one person who wasn’t impressed with the Khurrana brothers, none other than Ayushmann’s wife Tahira Kashyap. In Tahira’s words, the duo forgot the script and ended up doing crap comedy.
What would be an award show without sizzling performances, IIFA Awards night too saw some whistle podu performances from Sara Ali Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Ranveer Singh, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Madhuri Dixit who paid special tributes to her dance guru Saroj Khan.
Andhadhun emerged as the biggest winner with six awards in its kitty including Best Story and Best Director. Meghna Gulzar’s spy thriller Raazi won the Best Film Award and Alia Bhatt who played the lead role of Sehmat bagged the Best Actress Award. Ranveer Singh stole the show by bagging Best Actor Award for playing Emperor Khilji in Padmaavat. His on-screen wife Aditi Rao Hydari won the Best Supporting Actress Award for Padmaavat. For his superb portrayal as Kamli, Vicky Kaushal walked away with Best Supporting Actor Award. Ishaan Khattar and Sara Ali Khan took home the Best Debutant Award in the male and female category respectively.
Since IIFA is celebrating 20 years there were some special awards given for extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema.
