India scripts history with 1983 WC win at Lords
Cricket is often termed an Indian game accidentally invented by the British. But neither the enthusiastic crowd at Lord’s nor millions of fans who were watching India v/s West Indies final had no clue that they would be soon witnessing a historic moment.
On paper, Clive Lloyd-led Windies looked formidable, they had a great batting line up with Viv Richards and Lloyd. Ace bowlers like Marshal and Holding spit terror on the crease. The odds were highly against India, 1-66, by London’s bookies. But India’s advantage was that it had a young team, mostly in their 20’. Led by Kapil Dev, India cashed in on the skills of all-rounders, with medium pacers ruling the roost.
Indian bowlers make history:
On that fateful day of Jun 25, 1983, Mohinder Amarnath proved how useful a medium pacer could be by knocking off three wickets and bagging the player of match award. Indian bowlers bowled out the mighty the West Indies to just 140 in 52 overs, who were chasing India’s 183. The triumphant Indian team lifting the trophy from Lord’s balcony and presenting it to the then prime minister Indira Gandhi took the nation by storm, the profound effect of that win on India’s youth was such that, it continued to inspire and produce future cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar. Since then, Indian cricket never had to look back again!
