With the first-leg Indian Premier League (IPL) matches getting over, let’s analyze how each team performed initial matches at this tournament. Although we can’t draw any conclusions from these matches because some teams didn’t have their strongest lineup, there is still much to discuss.
CSK and KKR had the season opener match on Saturday as both teams had new captains. Jadeja took the baton of leading the yellow packs as Dhoni stepped down the skipper role. For KKR it’s the new man, the young talented Shreyas Iyer who will lead the team in 2022.
2022 season’s opening clash began with CSK batting as KKR won the toss and decided to bowl. Umesh Yadav was impressive with the new ball as he sent back the openers of CSK. The middle order shattered with a lack of focus on the ground. The Guru-Shishya combo of MS Dhoni and Jadeja settled on the ground and pushed CSK to a decent score of 131.
The Wankhede stadium witnessed the vintage MSD as the 40-year-old scored his 24th half-century in IPL with 38 balls. However, 131 was not even a competitive score for a team like KKR with star players like Ajinkya Rahane the Iyer-duo and Andre the muscle Russel. They surpassed the target easily with 6 wickets in hand and won the season opener.
MI couldn’t hold much together
For the second day, there were two matches – MI vs DC and RCB vs PBKS. In both matches, interestingly the toss winners turned out to be the winners. MI openers were very impressive as they found a rhythm with the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma- Ishan Kishan, but the middle order couldn’t carry on the fire as they settled for 177. Meanwhile, for Delhi, it was the middle-order batsmen who took the winning cause. Lalit Yadav, Shardul Thakur, and Axar Patel together scored 108 runs to guide an easy win for Delhi.
Kohli-Dupli combo set for RCB
RCB fans can finally relax as the team found a strong combo in the absence of ABD. The Kohli – Dupli combo was finally set to share more entertainment with the fans. Dinesh Karthik also contributed a raging performance to the total of 205 runs with 2 wickets loss. However, the balling department crumbled down the team’s hope of winning the first match of the season.
“ Ee Saala Cup Namde?”, we’ll have to wait and see! However “ Ee Saala Orange Cap” may be the skipper will bring to the team. PBKS crossed the huge margin with 6 balls left and 5 wickets in hand.
Pandya Brothers’ much-awaited fight
The new teams Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants clashed on the third day as everyone was fingers crossed to see the fight between the Pandya Brothers. Krunal Pandya dismissed his brother but Hardik took the victory for the team. Mohammad Shami was very impressive as he easily nabbed the wickets of the two world-class openers, KL Rahul and Quinton De Kock.
The fittest survives…
On Tuesday the 4th day of this season, IPL Sunrisers Hyderabad faced Rajasthan Royals.
In all four previous matches, it was the toss that decided the game but in the last match, the toss couldn’t help SRH to overpower the competitive RR. It was clearly the battle of the most balanced team in this season vs the weakest. RR had a strong lineup that everyone in the team had something to contribute to the victory. It was an easy win for RR with a lead of 61 runs.
As said earlier we can’t draw any conclusion from the first set of matches as many of the star players are yet to come. But still, hopes are high for Rajasthan Royals that if Sanju can lead the team likewise there’s a great chance of winning this tournament. However, the Sunrisers team management should do something to find a balance in the team else they had to shut their hopes of crossing the play-offs.
